The Bosshoss – Low Voltage [2010]

May 11, 2010 Leave a comment
On 8th December 2008 the curtain rose over the stage of the Admiralspalast Berlin and with this there began a new era in BossHoss history. We were witnessing the premiere of LOW VOLTAGE: The BossHoss as they have never before been seen or heard, on stage complimented by a 20 strong accompaniment of strings and horns, playing all BossHoss classics in completely new arrangements. What began with two solitary concerts, will soon be taking off in style. In April the album will be released featuring the best BossHoss songs recorded in the new LOW VOLTAGE sound.

The listener is in no way to expect another standard Best Of album in which songs already familiar have been given a slight workover and then hastily compiled. LOW VOLTAGE is new and very different and quite honestly, THE VERY BEST OF THE BOSSHOSS. 12,000 fans already enjoyed a sneak preview at an open air concert in Berlin last August and will surely testify that the great BossHoss songs, when interpreted in this acoustic fash… Read more.

Jello Biafra & Mojo Nixon – Prairie Home Invasion [1994]

April 9, 2010 1 comment
One of my favorite post-Dead Kennedys efforts from Mr. Biafra. The first time I listened I was just floored by the musical style. It had been the first time I heard Mojo Nixon and I was used to Jello being all about punk because of DK and his collaborations with NoMeansNo and D.O.A.. But Mojo’s cow-punk style was a nice change from all of that.

This first listen the most I got out of it was the wonderfully done music and only a few of the lyrics, namely the Phil Ochs remake “Love Me I’m a Liberal”. I was still impressed. Then I gave it a few more passing listens and didn’t get much more from it, but still loved it.

But I recently bought the album on vinyl and listened again and this time I feel I took a lot more from it. I finally paid attention to the lyrics more and understood their meaning. Jello throws out a lot of bitter remarks to his old DK band mates, namely in “Buy My Snake Oil” he states “Give in/Ride the punk nostalgia wave/For all it’s worth/Recycle the name of my … Read more.

Hank Ray – Mainstream Death Country [1993]

March 29, 2010 2 comments
You just know something is more than a little wicked in this world from the first time you hear Hank Ray’s so smooth baritone delivery bringing songs of delirium, loss and sacrifice. This is the darker side of country western pop mushed and smeared in the face of every lonely franchised bar along America’s 21st century highways. These are the songs that we live… not some namby cheer fest. You can’t help but open the door from the opening strains of violin, guitar and thubbing bass in “Endless Plains”
Yes, every night is filled with some “Trail of Dark Desire”. Here it isn’t evil as much as cool, detached, bleeding and forbidden. This is country with the reverb and echo of hot afternoons. The guitar walks behind and defines our thoughts and moans, but Hank Ray rides above the languid shuddering dreams. The Vegas parlor organ bridge’s waves of songs I’ve seen tired waitresses dance to. In the end, we’ll all probably meet at some heartless “Bar-B-Q of Souls” but at least it will sound…

The Legendary Shack Shakers – Agridustrial [2010]

March 28, 2010 Leave a comment
The Legendary Shack Shakers’ hell-for-leather roadshow has earned quite a name for itself with its unique brand of Southern Gothic that is all-at-once irreverent, revisionist, dangerous, and fun. Led by their wildly charismatic, rail-thin frontman/blues-harpist, J.D. Wilkes, the Shack Shakers are a four-man wrecking crew from the South whose explosive interpretations of the blues, punk, rock and country have made fans, critics and legions of potential converts into true believers. With the recent addition of former Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison (Hank III/Tomahawk) and drumming wunderkind, Brett Whitacre, the Legendary Shack Shakers have quickly become known for providing some of the best entertainment (live or otherwise) that you can get for your hard earned money.

As a budding filmmaker, “Colonel” J.D. has recently made his directorial debut with the indie documentary “Seven Signs.” The film depicts a struggling Appalachian and Delta culture that survives to this day, des… Read more.
